Houston chef takes home James Beard award

HOUSTON - A Houston chef took home a prestigious award Monday night.

Hugo Ortega won "Best Chef: Southwest" at the 2017 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards. The Southwest division includes Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah.

Ortega is the executive chef/co-owner of three popular Houston restaurants - Backstreet Cafe, Hugo's and Caracol. He is a five-time James Beard Awards finalist and has been recognized globally for his sharing of traditional Mexican cooking and culture.

Hugo's opened in 2002 and it boasts "authentic regional Mexican cuisine". Click here for more information.
