AUSTIN -- It's a food truck lovers dream. For the next six days you can get a taste of Austin on wheels in the first annual Truck by Truckwest.
For food truck owner Chris Cooper it's all bacon, all the time at his food truck, Lard Have Mercy.
“It's the meat candy of life,” Cooper said. “We were like, 'What are we going to call this bacon creation?' And we came up with Lard Have Mercy. We laughed for about three hours.”
Cooper's food truck has been open for about a year. He hopes taking part in Austin's newest food truck taste-off will mean more customers rolling over to his business.
“I think Truck by Truckwest is a great way for people to get to know the trucks here in Austin [and] get to know the different varieties of food here in Austin.”
“There's BBQ, there's Mexican, there's donuts. Fried chicken, a vegan-paleo place. There's literally a little bit of everything," said event organizer Brian Erickson.
He told KVUE that plenty of people have already signed up.
“They pay $20 and they get one of these badges,” he said.
Those taking part in Truck by Truckwest can go from 65 different food trucks all over Austin and try out their menus. Then they will vote for the one they liked the best.
Whichever food truck wins gets a $10,000 business enterprise grant.
“Some just want to make rent, some want to expand to brick and mortar. Some want a new trailer, some want a truck as well as a trailer,” Erickson said.
Gourdoughs Donuts is another food truck taking part in the event. Tina Zarate and her daughter Lucy stopped by for a quick snack.
“These are too good to pass up sometimes,” Zarate said.
She thinks Truck by Truckwest is a sweet idea.
“That would be a fun little outing to do,” she said.
The event kicks off Tuesday and runs through Sunday. Go here for more information.
