In a new book, Poking a Dead Frog, by Vanity Fair writer Mike Sacks, notable comedians talk about their craft. Along with Amy Poehler and  Mel Brooks, Vilanch does a section dishing about the Oscars. Vulture has an excerpt.

And he talks about 2003 when Steve Martin was the host and one joke that we all never heard.  Here it is:

“I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that my fly was open throughout the monologue. The good news is the camera puts on ten pounds.”

But, Vilanch recounts that Martin “wouldn’t say the joke” because he thought it was about his private parts.

Too bad! Seems pretty tame, doesn’t it?
