In a continuation of Johnny Depp’s Very Odd Year, this just in:

He is about to do reality TV. In China.

This Friday, according to Vanity Fair and The Hollywood Reporter, Depp will be the Very Special Guest present during the finale of the popular reality show Chinese Dream. He will choose the winning contestant AND he’ll be taking the winner with him on a trip to Hollywood.

The show, says VF, “is based on the British series Tonight’s the Night, which takes ordinary contestants and, through a series of performances and voter eliminations, claims to make their dreams come true. A trip with Depp, who is a mega-star in China, is apparently top of the wish list for contestants.”

During his visit to China in April, THR reports Depp was asked why he had decided to take on the role of arbiter in the show, and he told local media it was because he can relate to people harboring big dreams: When he was young, he wanted to be a rock musician, and only did movies to pay the rent, he said.

For some reason, we just can’t picture Depp hamming it up for reality cameras. Can you?
