NEW YORK -- Paula Patton says she doesn't understand all the fuss over her husband's controversial performance with Miley Cyrus at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.

During an appearance on Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live" Tuesday night, Patton told host Andy Cohen that she knew what was in store while watching Cyrus twerk on Robin Thicke.

"I wasn't surprised at all," Patton said. "Honestly, they rehearsed for three days beforehand. I don't know how not to dance with someone having their booty in your...all my friend's do it like that."

Three days after the Aug. 25 awards show, Cyrus told an MTV documentary film crew that she knew their would be a lot of talk over her number with Thicke.

"You're wanting to make history," Cyrus said, "Me and Robin the whole time said, 'you know we're about to make history right now.'"

While defending the VMAs performance, Patton also alluded to the 20-year-old pop star's recent hit, "We Can't Stop," which some believe makes references to ecstasy use.

"And I didn't really know what the big deal was," Patton added. "I didn't know if they thought Miley was going to sit down and play the piano like Alicia Keys. Her song's about taking molly [a slang term for ecstasy]. I don't understand. I didn't get the big deal."

Patton, 37, and Thicke, 36, have been married since 2005. The couple began dating in their teens. Their son, Julian, was born in 2010.
