DETROIT -- Prince Fielder is on one of six covers of ESPN’s annual “Body Issue,” which has athletes pose tastefully in the buff. The issue hits newsstands Friday.

ESPN.com published many of the photos Tuesday, as well as a behind-the-scenes video of Fielder’s photo shoot and a brief interview.

“I’m still in my prime, but I’ve got to be a little more smarter about my fitness as well as my nutrition,” Fielder says in the video, which presumably was shot before his season-ending neck surgery in May.

“I don’t like to eat too bad, but I just like to eat good food,” Fielder said. “I don’t necessarily like sweets.”

Fielder also talked a bit about his tattoos, which, obviously, are on full display in the magazine. He called the tribal ink on his right arm/shoulder “terrible” and “a mistake.”

Shouldn’t he be “over it” by now? Or does that just apply to baseball?

Anyway, there’s also a post-surgery Q&A with the former Tigers first baseman in the issue. It goes into his physique, workout tendencies and the like.

“You don't have to look like an Under Armour mannequin to be an athlete,” he says. “A lot of people probably think I'm not athletic or don't even try to work out or whatever, but I do. Just because you're big doesn't mean you can't be an athlete. And just because you work out doesn't mean you're going to have a 12-pack. I work out to make sure I can do my job to the best of my ability. Other than that, I'm not going up there trying to be a fitness model.

“I don't think working out makes you better at baseball. Doing actual baseball activities will help with that. But if I could just not do anything, and still be in shape and get through an entire season, that would be great. But that's not realistic. There are 162 games ahead of you that must be done.”
