SOCHI, Russia — Even Ashley Wagner thinks her angry face is funny.
The irked look the American figure skater made when she saw her marks in the team competition has gone viral, spawning dozens of memes and spoofs. But instead of being bothered by all the fuss, Wagner is having some fun with it.
“I think it’s absolutely hilarious, to be honest,” she said Saturday.
Wagner made the face when she appeared on the TODAY show following the team competition, and again in a photo shoot. She also used it in her Valentine’s Day wish to fans.
(No, there’s no truth to the rumor that she made the face when she and Americans got their bronze medal for the team event.)
"I’ve gotten a mixed bag of reaction,” Wagner said. “At the end of the day, I’m the type of person who what you see is what you get. I might be a good figure skater on the ice, but in Kiss and Cry, I still haven’t mastered the figure skating attitude where you sit and smile until the bitter end.
“The fact it went viral, it’s one of the most awesome things that happened to me in my entire life. I think it’s pretty funny.”
And she’s perfectly fine with making the face in pictures upon request.
Wagner’s face has been compared to McKayla Maroney’s “Not impressed” look from the London Olympics. That went viral, too, getting so popular that even President Barack Obama mimicked it when the Fierce Five visited the White House a few months after the Fierce Five won the gold medal in the gymnastics team event.
Asked if she’d make the face with Obama if the figure skaters get to visit the White House, Wagner made another priceless face. But this one definitely wasn’t angry.
“Wow. To even meet President Obama, I haven’t even wrapped my head around that,” she said.
