The role of Anastasia Steele is a hot one, for sure. Many actresses were rumored to be up for the Fifty Shades of Grey part that ultimately went to Dakota Johnson.

Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale gave it a shot, she tells MTV News.

In a word, it was “awkward,” she says.

“It actually was just me [in the audition]. It was like a two-page monologue, dialogue, of exactly what you would think it would be. Very uncomfortable. But it was sort of one of those things where you just had to go for it or you’re just gonna look lame — hopefully, I didn’t look lame.”

Describing it as “unlike any audition I have ever done before in my life,” Hale wasn’t sure what the particular scene was from the E L James novel, but it was steamy.

“Let’s just say I don’t want my grandmother watching. … It took me out of my comfort zone.”
