HOUSTON—A mother-son dance at a wedding just outside Austin is now a viral sensation, with more than six million hits on YouTube.

The mother of the groom Julie Ryan, who is from Houston, says she just can’t believe it.

“I love my son, I love my daughter-in-law,” said Ryan, “It was fun.”

The dance started out typical, but within seconds, Julie and her son Wesley broke it down – much to the surprise of the bride, Loriann, and all of the wedding guests.

The duo danced to a medley of songs ranging from the Twist, to the Nae Nae, to Gangnam Style.

Ryan says she had formal dance training as a child, but the freestyle moves her son choreographed were a challenge.

“To try and step ball change, that’s not how he put the dance together, so it took some learning.”

She says it all started a month before the wedding, when a friend sent her a video of another mother-son dance from a few years ago.

And when she asked her son if he’d be up for it:

“He said heck yeah I’m up for it,” she said.

But on her big day, did the bride feel upstaged by her new mother-in-law?

“She did not,” Ryan said. “On the video, you see Lorianne reacting, and she was so thrilled.”
