Former basketball star Dennis Rodman is under investigation by the federal government thanks to his recent trip to North Korea.

Rodman reportedly took "thousands of dollars" in gifts to North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-un for his birthday.

Washington is looking into whether those gifts violated U.S. sanctions.

Currently, a special license is needed to take most items into North Korea -- the only exceptions are food and medicine.

After a highly criticized trip to North Korea, Rodman checked back into rehab for alcohol abuse.
