Bayou City Art Festival underway in Memorial Park

HOUSTON – Touted as one of the nation’s top 10 juried fine art festivals, the Bayou City Art Festival is underway Friday in Memorial Park and runs through the weekend.

This weekend’s events boast 400 national and international juried fine and visual performing artists. Working in 19 media, artists will showcase their fine and pop original works, which range from decorative and functional clay to photography, pastel drawings to oil paintings, furniture to jewelry, leather goods to mixed media and sculpture.

The featured artist for this weekend’s event is Daniel Ng. Also, renowned artists Chris Coffey, Dolan Geiman, Dakota Pratt, Tanya Diskova, Khrystyna Balushka and Randy O’Brien will also be taking part.

The festivals will also feature family-friendly showcases like the popular Green Mountain Energy Children’s Creative Zone, the Adult Creative Zone, the KHOU Emerging Artist Zone, the Bayou City unLIMITed Stage, the Houston Arts Alliance Cultural Stage and the Microsoft X-Box Xperience.

There will also be plenty of musical entertainment on hand for the festival. Leading the event’s expanded stage is blues legend Marcia Ball; Hell Bent featuring five-time Grammy winner and steel guitar Hall of Famer Cindy Cashdollar with Johnny Nicholas; Margo Rey, four-time Billboard adult contemporary chart topper; South Texas Mariachi Mambo Bluesman Reno Perez and Shawn Pander, first winner of the John Lennon Songwriter Contest.

Also for the first time, food trucks will be serving at the festival, each with a signature dish created specifically for the event including: Bernie’s Burger Bus, The Golden Grill, Coreanos, Happy Endings Asian Fusion and Koagie Hots: Cheesesteaks.

The annual fundraiser within the festival, Art Heist: Radiant Orchid, a garden party celebrating the obsession with color, art and chance also pays homage to Pantone’s color of the year, radiant orchid.

Art Heist will take place on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. in Memorial Park. This annual fundraiser benefits Art Colony Association, producers of Bayou City Art Festival and their 15 nonprofit partners.

Art Colony Association has raised more than $35 million for local nonprofit programs through the festivals. This collaborative nonprofit event puts 100 percent of the proceeds back into the community through their nonprofit partners.

The festivals are funded in part by a grant from the city of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday at Memorial Park, located at 635 South Picnic Loop in downtown Houston.
