HOUSTON -- The Houston Zoo has announced a plan to bring back gorillas as part of a new exhibit set to open in spring 2015.
Zoo officials Thursday formally announced its $28 million capital campaign for Gorillas of The African Forest, a $28 million addition that will be home to rare Eastern Lowland gorillas.
The last gorilla to call the zoo home was a rare Eastern Lowland gorilla named M'Kubwa. "Mac," as he was known, died of old age in May 2004.
Zoo Director Rick Barongi says zoo officials initially plan to bring in four to six gorillas, with that number expected to expand to 10 to 15 as the family grows.
The exhibit will feature a waterfall, a stream and a boardwalk.
