Parade Survival Guide

11:22 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 8, 2003

Have a Plan

· Plan in advance to wear comfortable dress, travel safely and have fun.

Dress Appropriately

· November weather in Houston can range from cool to hot. Check weather conditions prior to leaving home for the parade.

· Dress in layers that you can peel off as the temperature rises. What feels comfortable when you leave may feel too hot by the end of the parade.

· Casual and comfortable wear should be your rule.

· Take a blanket or quilt along for seating or additional protection from the cool of the morning.

· Don’t forget your umbrella.

More Fun for the Kids

· Take age-appropriate small toys along to entertain the kids in route to and from the parade and while they are waiting for the parade to start.

· Take healthy snacks and drinks for the kids. Either Mother Nature’s or Murphy’s Laws dictate that kids require snacks with their entertainment.

· Be a kid yourself.

Travel

· Plan to leave early!

· Familiarize yourself with the parade route and parking areas prior to parade day.

· Listen to traffic reports prior to leaving home and while driving to the parade. There is no need to let traffic problems spoil your day.

Waiting for the Parade to Start

· Find a spot where the kids can be comfortable.

· Make kids as comfortable as possible (blankets and cushions work well).

· Play games and have lively conversation.

· Make friends with those around you.

During the Parade

· Have fun!

After the Parade

Drive safely and courteously.
