This year, and for the past 22 years, hundreds of children with special needs experienced the fun of the Rodeo Houston BBQ Cookoff thanks to a group of volunteers led by Red Ritch, a veteran of the Rodeo Barbecue. Kids enjoyed musical performances, acts by clowns, appearances by local celebrities and Houston Police officers, and of course, world-class barbecue. Each child left with a goodie bag full of prizes, a t-shirt and a smile on his or her face. KHOU 11 News reporter Katherine Whaley also spent time with the children during the day’s festivities.

Houston-area residents got gussied up in their hats and boots Friday for Go Texan Day. Trail riders on horseback and in covered wagons rode through the city streets on their way to Memorial Park. They'll camp out there tonight before heading downtown for the Rodeo Parade Saturday morning.

The Bar-b-que Cookoff continues through Saturday night. It's all part of the kickoff for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
