HOUSTON -- The 8th annual Beacon Awards luncheon took place on Friday, May 30, 2014 at the Hilton Americas Hotel.
The awards were given to individuals who represent the spirit of the civil rights movement.
Football star and actor Jim Brown was honored with the Beacon of Hope.
Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown was honored with the Beacon of Change.
The MLB Association, as well as the Houston Astros and efforts from the city of Houston was praised for their efforts to diversify the league.
Hank Arend and Frank Robinson, both Hall of Fame baseball players were also recognized at the event.
Maya Angelou was honored with the Beacon of Life; due to her passing, Good Morning America co-host and keynote speaker Robin Roberts accepted the award on her behalf.
