The League City Police Department has partnered with the National Traffic Safety Academy (NTSA) to be the first agency in the State of Texas to offer the Collision Avoidance Training Program or CAT Program. The CAT Program is funded by League City's Safelight Photo Enforcement Program revenues.

The program combines a Friday evening of classroom instruction with an 8-hour driving portion held on Saturday filled with driving exercises where teens will learn valuable driving techniques from trained League City Police Officers.

"CAT is one more example of LCPD’s desire to build a collaborative policing model that will result in improved safety for all of our citizens. I encourage you to enroll your teen today, so that we improve their chance for a safer tomorrow!" Chief  Mike Jez

ABOUT THE CAT PROGRAM

Most crashes involving teen drivers are classified as "avoidable." NTSA and the CAT Program were created by Paul Burris of Tallahassee, Florida. Paul's son died in an auto collision in 1992 when he was 17 years old. The CAT Program was created by professionals in the field of adolescent behavior, accident reconstruction engineering, substance abuse, and law enforcement training. The objective of the program is to enhance young drivers' awareness of the complex task of operating a motor vehicle. Teens will practice skills that will prepare them to anticipate and handle hazards that occur daily in normal driving conditions.

HOW IS THIS PROGRAM FUNDED?

The training is open to 16-19 years olds, who have a valid driver’s license, have a vehicle to drive for Saturday, valid insurance and live in League City or attend a CCISD school.   The cost of the equipment and manpower it takes to run the CAT Program is funded through League City's Safelight Photo Enforcement Program, but students are asked to pay a $39.00 fee for the course.  This rate is the most affordable rate in the country among CAT programs.
