HOUSTON – Summertime is in full swing, but it’s never too soon to check out the back-to-school savings – especially when it comes to expensive tech toys.

On Microsoft’s Student website, when you sign up and make purchases using a .EDU e-mail address, you’ll get 10 percent off. There's a special focus on touchscreen PCs, which isn’t surprising since the company is pushing for its customers to move on to Windows 8. There’s even one touchscreen listed for about $400, and it includes Office 365 (Word, Powerpoint, etc.).

Are you an Apple fan? The Shop Mac for Education website also offers back-to-school discounts for college students and their parents. Right now you can get a $100 App Store gift card if you buy a Mac computer or a $50 card if you buy an iPad or iPhone. There are also savings of up to $200 on computers and $100 on printers. To sweeten the deal, free shipping is available if you spend more than $50.

If you’re trying to decide between Mac and PC -- most students will be better off with a PC, but some schools are more Apple-oriented (depending on the type of studies), so it’s always best to check with the university before making your purchase.
