HOUSTON – It’s already time to start talking “back to school” – especially if your kids (or you) are heading off to college.

HP Academy is a website where college students can land deals on HP products – primarily laptops, desktops, and accessories. This year the company is promoting its Slate 7 Android-based tablet. If you buy a laptop or a regular desktop computer (priced at $799 or more) along with a Slate 7, you’ll get enough cash back so that the tablet is essentially free.

Texas-based computer maker Dell has a similar website for college students (and their parents) called Dell University. This year it’s also offering $200 back with a PC purchase, but the money comes in the form of an eGift card meant to be used on an Xbox. Students can also save up to 30 percent on computers and other Dell products, however.

Trying to decide between a laptop or a desktop? Desktops tend to be cheaper and easier to repair, but laptops save a lot of precious dorm space.
