You may have heard about the deadly tornado outbreak early Wednesday morning across Missouri, Kentucky and Illinois. The red dots on the map above show where the tornadoes were reported including near Branson, Missouri just north of Springfield. In all, several twisters claimed nine lives as a sweeping cold front collided with very moist air that had been in place for several days.
February tornadoes aren't that unusual, but the number this month combined with the ones in January are a trend no one wants to see. It isn't even spring yet, but already, there have been twice as many tornadoes in the first two months this year than the average over the past ten years:
The majority of those occurred in January (97) and here in Houston, we've had nearly a dozen. Hopefully, this isn't a sign of a busy storm season across the U.S.
