Hurricane hunters found hurricane force winds, so at 11:20am Tuesday morning Isaac has been upgraded to a hurricane. The major threat with any slow moving tropical cyclone is flooding and the National Hurircane Center has been outlining this threat in all the weather briefings I've seen for the last couple of days. Flooding is the biggest killer in storms of this nature. The storm surge is also a concern in that it will weaken all the man made barriers we use to combat flooding. The New Orleans levee system, flood gates and nearby dams are all tested during major events like these.
Isaac will be making landfall within the next 24 hours. Property losses due to flooding could be in the billions given the current slow motion and potential for 18" of rain across the central gulf coast location. Life is precious and for now all actions to safe guard your loved ones should be completed. It's time to hunker down as we like to say around here.
Here's the latest from the National Hurricane center. . . .
