A year ago farmers, ranchers and home owners like Mary Ann Thielen could stick their size ten shoe into the cracks in the ground. Mary Ann lives in Port Lavaca and said this time its too much of a good thing. The cracks have all disappeared and flooding is now a concern, As one of channel elevens weather watchers she called in 4.6 inches of rain from Thursday through Saturday morning. The problem according to Mary was that the ground was already saturated before the rain started. Now three rivers that run into the Matagorda Bay area are swollen beyond capacity and will reach flood stage over the weekend. The Tres Palacios River , Navidad and the Lavaca River will be at flood stage until at least Monday. The usually gently flowing Guadalupe will also flood thanks to heavy rain upstream in the hill country. Check out the latest Texas drought index - what a difference a year makes. The only drought areas are near Corpus Christi and South of Del Rio. The rest of the state has recovered well thanks to wet fall and early winter seasons.
