The set-up for heavy rain has been in place since Monday and today, it played out in a big way. Gulf moisture has been streaming into Southeast Texas since Monday while a cold front has been slowly advancing across Texas. Today, training storms dumped over 6 inches of rain northeast of Houston in Humble and Kingwood, based on radar estimates.
As wet as it's been, it's going to get worse before it gets better. Now that the front is on the move, it will plow into the humid air, lift it and produce more storms. Unlike fast-moving winter cold fronts, this one is slowly easing into the humid air and it may not cross into the Gulf until late Thursday night. That means more rain and the possibility of more training storms which could produce flooding overnight into Thursday morning. Some of our computer models estimate 4 to 6 inches of rain could fall.
This is bad news for people with blue tarps on their roofs, but the good news is that the front will deliver cooler weather here by the end of the week.
