Summer is off to a sizzling start across the state this upcoming weekend. A round of mid 90 degree days started the week, but the finale will be as hot as the middle of summer halfway through June. During the month of June, Houston has had only thirteen 100 plus degree days since 1937. In the the deadly heat wave of 1980 Houston suffered through 8 days of 100 degree temperatures in June. One hundred degree days are not uncommon around Texas in June as you can see by the maps. Texas will be sweltering, so you may want to take precautions if your traveling on vacation or just hanging around the pool this weekend. Make sure you drink plenty of water, wear loose light colored clothing and stay indoors during the hottest part of the day. Heat Index values will probably surpass 100 degrees all weekend. Relief is in sight by the end of next week as the high pressure ridge that caused this heat wave, drifts into the eastern half of the Gulf of Mexico. With more moisture available a few summer showers should return each afternoon.
