The prospect for snow I first mentioned Monday is coming into focus. Today, the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for virtually all of Southeast Texas.:

This basically means that anywhere within these colored counties, there is the possibility for snow or sleet to accumulate that could cause hazardous travel. An area of snow currently in West Texas will swing toward us. At the same time, a surge of moisture coming from Northern Mexico will merge with it. All this will happen as temperatures drop Friday morning from the low 40s into the mid 30s. Remember, the temperature at the ground doesn't have to be 32° to have snow, but if it is, then the snow will stick. A light rain will begin Friday morning and then, as temperatures drop, the rain will change to snow. Flurries are likely north of town by noon and a large area of snow could develop by late afternoon across downtown Houston. Most of the action will taper off by late evening. Then, another problem will develop. Whatever does fall, be it rain or snow, will ice up overnight and that could lead to treacherous driving conditions Friday night into Saturday morning as our first freeze this season arrives. Elevated highways, bridges and overpasses could be especially tricky. Tomorrow night is a good night to stay indoors and bring the plants and pets in. Here are the areas under a freeze warning:
