HOUSTON – A woman was charged with kidnapping after she took her family member's child from Houston to Mexico without permission, according to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

Police said Laghana Nikita Nelson visited her cousin-in-law’s apartment in the 7900 block of S. Sam Houston E. on December 16, 2010. The cousin-in-law had a 2-year-old son.

According to court documents, Nelson told her cousin that she was visiting from California and staying at a hotel room in Pasadena with her boyfriend, Gregory Jacobs. Nelson asked if the cousin’s little boy could spend the night with her so he could play with her two sons.  Nelson promised she would return the child the following morning by 9.

The mother told police she began to call Nelson after her child did not arrive. Nelson told the woman she had overslept and would return the child within 45 minutes. After that, Nelson sent a text message stating she was lost. She then cut off all communication with the mom.

On December 18, Nelson was found at a hotel in Las Cruces, Mexico with Jacobs, her two kids and the 2-year-old boy. Nelson said all three kids were hers, according to police.

Las Cruces police took a photo of the child and sent it to the Houston Police Department.

HPD positively identified the missing child, who was then returned to his parents.

The DA charged Nelson with felony kidnapping. Her bond was set at $5,000.
