SUGAR LAND, Texas – Police on Thursday released the sketch of a suspect who threw a woman to the ground and stole her phone outside a Sugar Land mall.

According to the Sugar Land Police Department, the crime happened outside First Colony Mall about 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 15.

Police said a woman was leaving the mall via the doors by Forever 21 when she was approached by a light-skinned black man. She told police she was looking down and texting when the man came up and tried to grab her phone.

"(He) grabs my phone with both hands. I have a death grip. I look at him and I'm like what the hell are you doing," said the student.

She fought back.

The suspect, a young male, continued to pull at the phone, police said.

"He pulls me down to the ground. Takes my phone and bolts. I didn't realize the guy next to him was his friend. I'm like, 'why is this guy standing here not helping me,'" said the victim.T

The man ran toward the nearby Methodist Hospital.

The woman suffered minor injuries but managed to chase the suspect a short distance before flagging down a passerby to help look for the suspect.

She described the suspect as 17 to 19 years old with an afro-style haircut. He was wearing a red and white motorcycle jacket, black jeans and white shoes. Witnesses said the man was with another man wearing a blue hoodie and blue jeans.

Police said the victim was lucky she wasn't hurt more seriously. But that wasn't going through her mind.

"It's always a good idea to give up a phone. It's always better to give up your phone worth a few hundred dollars than it is your health, or even your life impacted in a very negative way," said Sugar Land Police Department Spokesman Doug Adolph.

The victim has a message for the guy who got away: "Karma will totally get you. And I don't think you should ever do this because there will be serious repercussions if you mess with the wrong person," said the victim.

From now on, she says she'll keep her phone put away and keep her mace ready for anything or anyone that comes her way.

Anyone with information should call the Sugar Land Police Department at (281) 275-2540 or Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at (281) 342-TIPS (8477).
