HOUSTON—Harris County residents have a new online tool to find out about crime in their neighborhoods.

Sheriff Adrian Garcia on Monday said the new Crime Reports map allows users to search for stats based on addresses, ZIP codes and cities.

The tool also lets users sign up for e-mail crime alerts.

"This up-to-date online tool not only helps us understand crime trends but it provides transparency by putting our crime records in your hands, and accountability by showing law-abiding residents our targets," said Garcia. "Implementing this modern technology is just another step I’m taking to help make the sheriffs office a modern, 21st century crime-fighting agency."

Users can search for statistics on a variety of crimes, including homicides, break-ins, robberies, assaults, sexual offenses, property crimes and vehicle theft.

Users can also search for information on registered sex offenders.

Garcia said the online crime map will be updated several times a day with officer-written reports from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, as well as other partner law enforcement agencies.
