HOUSTON – Two men were taken to the hospital early Friday following a shooting near Sawyer Park, a popular Washington Avenue sports bar, according to Houston police.
HPD officers working the Washington Avenue night club strip heard several gun shots around 2:15 a.m. Police ran about a block to Sawyer and found one man shot and another running from the scene. Police tackled the suspect, 28-year-old Michael Robert Garza, and took him into custody.
Garza was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries he received during the tackle.
The victim, who was shot twice, was transported to Ben Taub Hospital in serious, but stable condition.
Police said the two men were at a bar drinking when they got into some sort of altercation, which led to the shooting.
Garza is now facing aggravated assault charges.
