HOUSTON – Investigators were on the hunt Friday for an armed security officer accused of fatally shooting the mother of his kids at a Houston dental office.
In a press release Friday afternoon, HPD said murder charges were pending against 41-year-old Noel Sosa-Ruiz.
Police said Ruiz barged into Smiley Dental & Orthodontics, located in the 6000 block of Bissonnet at Rampart, around 6 p.m. Thursday.
Once inside, he shot the victim – 29-year-old Yodani Cruz-Rojas, a mother of three who worked at the office – multiple times.
Ruiz fled, and Rojas died at the scene.
Four doors down from Smiley Dental, at Universal Hair, employees heard the commotion.
"It was terrible, it was terrible," barber Ramon Toledo said. "The assassin walked out of the clinic, and calmly goes to the car."
Toledo referred to the shooter as an "assassin," he said, because of his cool demeanor.
Hairdresser Guadalupe Soto ran out to help. From outside, she heard someone inside the dental office screaming.
It was Rojas.
"She was just yelling. You couldn’t control her. That’s when my friend and I walked into the clinic, and we found her still breathing. We called 911," Soto said.
Police said Rojas was the mother of two of Ruiz’s children, and that she and Ruiz were in a relationship. They had recently moved from Florida to Houston.
Investigators believe they had been fighting on the phone shortly before the shooting.
Rojas was the mother of three daughters – a 5-year-old, a 17-month-old and a 3-month-old. It was not clear which two she had with Ruiz.
CPS took temporary custody of the children after Rojas’ death and placed them in foster care. CPS officials said there will be an initial custody hearing for the girls on Monday.
Meanwhile, investigators were asking the public to help them track Ruiz down.
Ruiz drives a silver minivan – possibly a Dodge Caravan – with Florida plates. He also has a white Toyota with partial Texas plates RZ2 or RZZ.
Investigators said Ruiz is a state-certified armed security officer and has a concealed handgun license.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to call HPD Homicide at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
