HOUSTON — Houston police have identified a third suspect wanted in connection to a robbery that left one customer dead at a westside Denny’s on Aug. 26.

Kenya D. Jackson, 20, is charged with capital murder, the Houston Police Department announced early Saturday. Jackson is not yet in custody, but two of his alleged accomplices are.

Corey Hilton, 20, and Mario Hilton, 22, were both arrested and have been charged with capital murder in the 182nd state District Court.

Police said a fourth person, the driver of the getaway van, was not yet in custody.

HPD investigators said Corey and Mario Hilton and Kenya Jackson were all wearing bandanas and masks when they entered the Denny’s restaurant in the 7300 block of Washington Avenue and immediately fired several shots. They ordered everyone to the floor and started robbing the customers.

During the robbery, a customer and a restaurant employee were shot. The suspects then fled the scene.

Robert G. Placette, 64, of Katy was identified as the customer who was shot and later died. Witnesses said Placette was shot as he tried to protect children who were in the restaurant.

“It gives me actually a lot of comfort ...my dad’s dead, there’s nothing that can be done about that, but at least the police have done a great job of stopping them from hurting somebody else,” Drue Placette, the victim’s son, said.

The wounded worker, 43, survived.

HPD said an investigation led to the identification of the Hiltons and Jackson as suspects in the case. All three were charged on Friday, and the Hiltons were arrested. Jackson and the driver remain at-large, however.

After the Denny’s hold-up, the Hiltons were both arrested for different crimes. At that time, police had no idea they were involved with the robbery. Corey Hilton was even briefly let go on bond.

The third suspect, Jackson, has been in trouble, too — he was out on bond in a case of tampering with evidence.

Placette’s family hopes someone turns him in.

“Honestly, I’m not mad at these guys. I’m mad at the stupid mentality, these kids are being raised with,” the victim’s son said. “There’s no family values, that’s what broken. If we can fix that, we can fix a lot.

According to court records, Mario Hilton was already in custody for accident that caused injury or death.

Corey Hilton was out on bond for a weapons charge.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Jackson or on the identity of the fourth suspect is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
