HOUSTON—A Galveston man is accused of torching a police officer’s personal vehicle.

Investigators said earlier this month Robert Basaldua borrowed the car from a friend, who is the stepdaughter of a Houston Police Department officer.

Basaldua allegedly told the friend to report the vehicle stolen and then he set it on fire in the street, police said.

Police said Basaldua’s girlfriend told them what happened and they found police gear that had been stolen from the car hidden in Basaldua’s house.
