HOUSTON – Charges have been filed against a man accused of trying to steal an ATM from a Texas Medical Center parking garage.
Anthony Hampton, 25, is charged with attempted theft of an automatic teller machine.
According to court documents, Hampton and three other suspects tried to steal an ATM from a parking garage/transit center in the 1700 block of Colonnade around 3 a.m. on January 19, 2012.
Med Center security officers said they saw the suspects, all of whom were masked and wearing dark clothing, trying to make off with the ATM on a remote surveillance video feed.
The security officers and HPD responded to the scene, and the suspects tried to run.
Two of them, including Hampton, jumped over a fence and ran through a nearby apartment complex, investigators said.
Officers were eventually able to catch up with Hampton and take him into custody.
The owner of the ATM, BBVA-Compass, said it cost $17,600 to replace the machine. It was loaded with $60,000 in cash when the attempted theft occurred.
Charges were filed against Hampton on February 13, 2012.
