HOUSTON – A 33-year-old man is facing felony charges after police say he left his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter unattended in a crib while he went to buy cat food.
Reese Bateman is charged with child abandonment.
According to court documents, Bateman was babysitting the little girl on January 25, 2011, at a home in the 5600 block of Beverly Hill in Houston when the incident occurred.
Bateman told police he needed to go to the store to get cat food, but the girl was asleep in her crib.
Instead of waking her, Bateman told police he left her there and went to the store.
Bateman said when he returned home, the girl was still asleep. But a short time later, when he was sitting on the couch, he heard her crying.
He said he found her on the floor of her bedroom without her diaper on.
When the girl’s mother got home, she told police Bateman confessed to leaving the baby alone while he went to the store.
She said she put ice on the little girl’s bruises.
Later, when the girl’s father came to pick her up, he said the mother told him that the baby had fallen out of the crib.
After he saw the bruises, the father took his daughter to Clear Lake Regional Hospital, where doctors said she had internal injuries.
The father called police.
Charges were filed last week.
