Crime Blog: Authorities begin new campaign to combat organized retail crime

HOUSTON – Houston authorities announced an aggressive new campaign Monday to combat organized retail crime.

Police said organized retail crime refers to groups, gangs or individuals who obtain retail merchandise through theft or fraud and then resell it.

According to authorities, the top ten stolen products are designer clothing, electronics, medications and baby items. The activity drives up the prices for consumers and, according to the FBI, costs more than $15 billion annually.

Police said Clear Channel Outdoor and Yellow Cab and providing billboards in and around the Houston area to remind residents to report the crime.

Anyone with information on suspects participating in organized retail crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (713)-222-TIPS. A reward of up to $5,000 will be given for information that leads to an arrest.
