HOUSTON -- A recent rash of ATM thefts took a bizarre turn over the weekend when some would-be criminals attempting to take a machine were halted by a small piece of hardware.
Surveillance video shows a truck slamming through a glass door and into a convenience store located on Wallisville Road and the Katy Freeway.
Store owner Khan Khan watched the entire ordeal unfold on his iPad.
“We are frustrated but this is part of the business,” Khan said. “This is 15 to 20 thousand dollars in damage.”
The surveillance footage shows three suspects hoisting the ATM into the truck. The machine falls out.
The suspects are seen returning 30 seconds later and trying again, but by that time the clerk had called 911.
The suspects eventually give up and drive away. The power cord for the ATM was tied to a phone line inside the store causing the machine to fall out of the truck.
In recent weeks, thieves have targeted several Houston convenience stores, either breaking into ATMs or stealing the entire machine.
The suspect’s stolen vehicle was retrieved by police a couple of miles from the convenience store. No one has been arrested.
Police believe the crimes could be connected.
