HOUSTON – The family of a teenager who was gunned down on the way home from a soccer game Monday night says their son was not in a gang.
Ruben Agostadero, 15, and his 16-year-old friend, Raul Pillado, were walking on Club Creek near Beechnut around 7:30 p.m. Monday when two trucks pulled out of nowhere and as many as five people started shooting.
The teens tried to run away, but they were both hit. Agostadero died at the scene. Pillado survived, but remained hospitalized Tuesday afternoon.
Agostadero’s family moved to Houston from Mexico before the teen was born, hoping for a better life.
And while Agostadero’s family said the victim had friends who were gang members, they were convinced that Ruben was not involved.
"He was the best brother and best son," said his sister, Sylvia Agostadero. "We’re gonna miss him."
Jose, a friend of Ruben’s who found out about his death on Facebook, said the victim did have some enemies.
"I didn’t believe it. I was like, is this a joke," Jose said. "He was a good person, but he told me a lot of people didn’t like him."
Since the shooting happened early in the evening, investigators believe there were witnesses.
They are hoping someone will come forward with information.
"He didn’t deserve to die like that," said Sylvia Agostadero.
Investigators were still looking for the five suspects Tuesday evening. They believe some of them were in a white Ford F-150 when the shooting happened, and others were in a black pickup.
