Every day we hear from you about traffic troubles around the Houston area. One driver on the south side told us about a problem that made for a bumpy and dangerous drive.
"You ready, here we go, big bump! woo!" Ibby Bandercan warns her daughter, 10-year-old Grace Bandercan, about the bumpy railroad tracks they driver over on Willowbend near Stella Link.
"It seems like there are two ways to approach it… either a complete dead stop or flying over the tracks… and it's just really dangerous," Bandercan told us.
At one point, the mess on the road even created a mess in the car. Grace told us, "My mom usually tells me when we are about to go over the railroad tracks and I had my chocolate milk and we went over the railroad tracks and it spilled all over me."
Ibby tried to find a way to fix the problem, then she emailed me to ask for my assistance with the problem. "After making phone calls and not getting anywhere, I saw your segment and I thought I think that's going to do the trick!"
Ibby sent photos, which we passed along to Union Pacific, the railroad company that maintains the tracks. Their crews immediately got to work investigation the problem.
In this email, Union Pacific spokesperson Raquel Espinoza told us,
"After assigning a crew to the crossing, they discovered they are going to completely rebuild the crossing. Materials are scheduled to arrive soon and we're now looking at mid-July."
This week UP crews were on site getting ready to replace the crossing. They are delivering the materials they need to repair the crossing. Engineers tell us they will replace the railroad ties and tracks and resurface the concrete for a smoother ride.
Now Ibby and Grace can beat the traffic without the bump. "I'm so excited, I cannot thank you all enough," Bandercan said.
According to Union Pacific, the construction will only require a one-day road closure.
