TEXAS CITY, Texas — A jury Thursday found the owner of Whiskerville Animal Santuary Inc. treated 200 cats cruelly after abandoning them for at least 40 days and declared about 170 cats that survived will not be returned to the feline sanctuary.

Wydell Lorraine Dixon, owner of Whiskerville in Texas City, appealed a justice of the peace ruling to Galveston County Court of Law No. 3, seeking to retain the cats seized by the county after authorities found them living in squalid conditions Jan. 3.

Although Dixon and her employee Kimberly Jane Paskert, 48, were indicted on criminal charges, each with four counts of animal cruelty, a trial date has yet to be set on the state jail felony charges, prosecutors said.
