MAGNOLIA, Texas – The search continues for a horse that vanished after a stable fire in Magnolia Tuesday morning.
Thirteen horses were killed in the 2-alarm blaze at the Goslin Nix Stables at Superior Road and FM 1488.
Even for the toughest of cowboys, the fire was a heartbreaker.
"This is my life. These aren't just animals, they were my friends," said stable owner Fred Goslin as he choked back tears. "I don’t have words that can even describe it. It’s like an unbelievable nightmare."
The Goslins originally thought 14 horses were trapped by the flames, but later learned that a horse named Whiskey Lullaby was among the 15 that made it out alive.
Someone spotted Whiskey running down Superior Road, but she hasn’t been seen since. Searchers on horseback have braved the heat daily to search for the 7-year-old half-Arabian.
They found tracks on Thursday, but the trail disappeared.
Whiskey belongs to Fred’s daughter.
"You can put out an Amber Alert on a child, but I don’t know how you put out an Amber Alert on a horse," Carissa Shumaker said.
He suspects someone might have snatched their precious Whiskey. The horses are valued between $60,000 and $100,000,
"I would hate for somebody to think they can just sell this horse," Goslin said. "She deserves to have her life back."
Whiskey is white with three white hooves. Her right front hoof is black. Her tail is also black.
The other horses that survived are being treated for minor injuries, but all are expected to be OK. Anyone with information on the missing horse is asked to call 901-461-1231 or 832-326 7036.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
