HOUSTON—People in the Rice Military area, near Memorial Park, say it’s a dog-friendly neighborhood -- but right now, pet owners are on edge.

"Seems to me like everyone is nervous," said dog owner Alex Gipson. "Before, people on that side of the park would let their dogs off their leashes and run around, and no one’s doing that anymore."

Several weeks ago, Charlotte Liberda discovered her dogs eating some cheese balls that someone had apparently thrown on her property.

"One of my dogs fell down and started having a seizure," said Liberda. "Then a second one, then a third got sick, and I immediately knew I had a crisis on my hands."

She rushed her six dogs to the vet. The pets were so sick, Liberda said they almost died.

What’s more, she said test results showed the cheese ball contained strychnine. Strychnine is normally used as a pesticide, but it can be deadly to animals and people.

"This was intent to kill," Liberda said.

Her dogs have since recovered.  HPD is investigating the incident, and Crime Stoppers has offered a reward for information on any suspects in the case.

But so far, there have been no arrests.
