PASADENA, Texas – Police are hoping to make an arrest soon in the sadistic torture of a pet Chihuahua in Pasadena.
The owners found their dog cowering beneath a guest house in the backyard after learning their home had been burglarized. Little Ike had been burned, stabbed and beaten with a baseball bat. The dog wasn’t moving and they thought he was dead.
"I don’t know how they could do such a thing to an animal, look at them in the face and torture them, hear them cry, scream and squeal," said Iris Garcia, Ike’s owner. "How would you feel if they did something to someone in your family?"
Ike survived but he remains in serious condition at the Angel Animal Hospital in Pasadena.
"We all lost a lot of sleep over this little guy last night," said Meagan Gardner, the hospital’s office manager. "It’s hard to see something this inhumane."
Vets are doing their best to save Ike, but his his prognosis is guarded.
"It just hurts me to see him like this," Garcia said as she comforted Ike.
"It’s certainly a sadistic act," said Bud Corbert, an assistant chief with the Pasadena Police Department. "And I would imagine that most people would have nothing but disdain for someone who could do something like this."
The burglar or burglars also poured baby oil all over the floors of the Garcia home and stole jewelry and two laptops.
Police say they have a person of interest who is in his teens. He is not in custody.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information in the case.
