HOUSTON – If you’re looking to add a four-legged friend to your family this holiday season, there are plenty of pets waiting at BARC.

The city of Houston’s animal shelter will be open to the public on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day – and they’ll be offering half-price adoptions for dogs and cats.

The $27.50 adoption fees will only last through January 1, 2011.

BARC has hundreds of dogs and cats who need good homes, including a wide selection of large and small dogs, mixed-breeds, full-bred animals, puppies and kittens.

The adoption fee covers all vaccinations, microchipping, free dog-training classes and spay or neuter surgery.

People who’d like to foster a dog or cat are welcome at BARC, too.

BARC is located at 3200 Carr Street in northeast Houston. For directions and photos of adoptable and lost pets, visit or call 713-229-7300.

BARC will be open from noon to 6 on Christmas and New Year’s.

The shelter’s normal operating hours are noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays, 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays and 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays.

The shelter is closed on Mondays.
