HOUSTON -- Visitors got their first real peek at Baylor, the Houston Zoo's latest star, as the 15-day-old Asian elephant calf made his debut Wednesday.
The 348 pound newborn stuck close to his mother, Shanti, a 19-year-old elephant that lives in the McNair Asian Elephant Habitat at the Houston Zoo.
He was named Baylor in recognition of the efforts by the Baylor College of Medicine's research team that has been working to reduce the threat of a potentially lethal elephant herpes virus.
