LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas --The stables at the Houston SPCA must seem like heaven to a group of badly neglected animals.

“Most of them are emaciated,” said SPCA Spokesperson Meera Nandlal. “None of them had food or water and they were actually eating their own feces to survive.

The animals were just barely clinging to life at a property on CR 3600 in North Liberty County.

Sheriff’s deputies received a complaint and together with the SPCA, seized six horses, one donkey, two dogs, one cat and four pigs.

Authorities said the animals appeared to have been abandoned and they were still trying to track down the owner.

A seizure hearing has been scheduled for next Tuesday and criminal charges have not been ruled out. In the meantime, questions remain about why the animals were left to fend for themselves.

Nandlal said their road to recovery will be a long one.

“But we hope that as we’re helping them now, they’re getting comfort and care and they can move forward now,” said Nandlal.
