WHARTON, Texas -- Pet owners at a Wharton apartment complex were shocked when they received a letter from the office explaining that pets are not allowed.

The Meadows is a government-assisted housing apartment complex located in the 500 block of Willow Lane.

Barbara and Alfred Gutierrez have lived at the complex for more than two years and said their dogs have never been a problem before.

"They didn't tell us nothing about having no pets or you got to pay just a deposit," said Barbara Gutierrez.

There is no pet policy in their lease.

The other option given in the notice was to vacate within 30 days.

Alfred Gutierrez said they've had three chihuahuas for years and one just had puppies. The animals helped distract him from his battle with cancer and infections.

"I didn't know what to think," said Alfred Gutierrez. "I didn't know whether to go crazy or what, but I knew my puppies wasn't going nowhere."

Neighbors said the animals recently became an issue when some pit bulls at the complex started chasing children around.

A manager told KHOU 11 News that only service dogs are permitted at the complex, but wouldn't confirm if there was a written pet policy.
