The Houston Humane Society announces 700 male cat neuters will be performed for the general public for free at their location, 14700 Almeda Road, on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Last year’s event proved to be very successful, as HHS exceeded their goal of 600 neuters, resulting in the goal being increased to 700 for 2014.

Fix Felix for Free is an event HHS holds each year, and appointments are required. Houstonians can make an appointment for up to five male cats by calling 713-433-6421 or by emailing fixfelix(at)houstonhumane(dot)org.

Each day, 70,000 puppies and kittens are born to pets that have not been spayed or neutered, contributing to the massive pet overpopulation problem that plagues Houston. On Feb. 19, the Houston Humane Society and local cat owners are teaming up to help reduce those unwanted litters.

“Appointments fill up fast for this very popular community event,” said Monica Schmidt, of the Houston Humane Society. “Be sure to call or email now to secure your cat a spot.”

In addition to preventing overpopulation, neutering or spaying cats can positively impact the animal’s overall health. According to http://www.spayusa.org, cats that are spayed or neutered live longer, on average 3-5 years longer. These cats are also less likely to roam and have a decreased risk of contracting diseases or getting hurt.

When arriving for an appointment, all cats must be dropped off in a hard plastic pet carrier. There is a limit of five cat neuters per household. An appointment is absolutely necessary; no walk-ins will be accepted.

For more information, please visit the HHS website, http://www.houstonhumane.org, or call 713-433-6421 to make an appointment.
