Rover Oaks Pet Resort and Natural Pawz joined forces throughout November to present Pawz for a Cauze, a fundraising drive to raise money and awareness for one of Houston’s most heartwarming charities.  Their charity of choice, PAWS Houston, is a group that reunites chronic and terminally ill patients with their pets at a time when they need each other the most.  Rover Oaks’ Houston, Rover Oaks Katy, and ten Natural Pawz locations collected donations for the group from November 1st through Thanksgiving Day, and raised $5,000 to help PAWS with their mission.  All donors received recognition on a special Pawz for a Cauze leaf displayed on the wall of the location where they contributed to PAWS Houston, which are being collected and delivered to PAWS Houston patients at local hospitals to show the love and support of the donors and our community.

The collaboration between Rover Oaks and Natural Pawz served as a great way to help a unique charity in Houston, while also educating the community about the services the charity provides. Since 2002, PAWS Houston has been helping sustain relationships between pet owners and their pets through a period of the owner's terminal and/or chronic illness both in the hospital and at home.  When possible, PAWS Houston facilitates visits to the hospital, hospice, nursing home and rehabilitation centers in the hopes of improved physical and mental health for the pet owner. Additional services may include subsidized veterinary care, volunteer pet care, foster care and pet adoption. In addition to direct client services, PAWS Houston also plays a large role in educating the medical and veterinary communities about the benefits and risks of animal companionship for people with medical and financial hardships, something facing so many today.  “Our clients are people who face many losses: health, employment, and sometimes support of family and friends. By helping our clients keep their animals, we help them keep at least one part of the life they enjoyed,” said Donna Dishman, Executive Director of PAWS Houston.  “For our clients, animal companionship has been an important part of their lives – so important, in fact, that many people tell us of foregoing their own needs to meet those of their animals. When we hear of any animal that is important enough that a person will give up his/her life-prolonging medication or other necessities to feed that animal, we know what we do is essential. The funds raised from Pawz for a Cauze will go a long way in helping us impact the lives of current and future clients, providing peace of mind so that they may focus on their health and treatment.” she added.

Rover Oaks and Natural Pawz, both avid supporters of animal welfare and non-profit organizations, saw an opportunity to join forces to make a difference and to bring awareness of the need and benefits of the services provided by PAWS Houston. “Our objective was to help PAWS Houston ensure that their clients can keep their companion pets without making potentially life-threatening sacrifices,” said Steve Smith, owner of Rover Oaks Pet Resort. “We are incredibly grateful to our clients and the community for their generous support of this initiative and look forward to sharing the Pawz for a Cauze leaves with the clients currently staying in the hospital,” Smith added.  "At Natural Pawz, we are locally owned and we strive to contribute directly to local organizations that focus on pets and people," said Biff Picone, co-owner of Natural Pawz.  "Paws Houston has a wonderful mission and is operated by very passionate people who are making a difference for many patients, re-uniting them with their pets while they are in the hospital and providing valuable resources to ensure their companion animal has all they need," Picone added. “It’s so touching to see our community come together to support PAWS Houston, helping to provide vet services, food, emergency care, cat litter, and other essential needs necessary to keep the owner and pet together as long as possible,” said Joy Lee, co-owner of Rover Oaks in Katy. “Furthermore, these contributions could prevent someone who is alone from also being lonely, providing access to the special relationship animals have with their human caretakers, which is especially important as we celebrate the holidays.”

In addition to funds and volunteers, PAWS Houston is always in need of supplies and essentials to provide to their clients.  Their current wish list includes toys, flea and heartworm medicine, dog shampoo, dog and cat collars, office supplies, printing, advertising, event location hosts, stamps, copy paper, storage unit, store gift cards and much more.  To learn more about how you can continue to help PAWS Houston, visit www.pawshouston.org.
