Wayfair.com announced this year's most popular Halloween costumes for pets, with heroic icons including Bat-Dog, Spider-Dog, and a cape-clad superhero topping the list. Spending on Halloween costumes for pets – mostly dogs, but occasionally cats – is expected to hit a record $370 million this year, up nearly 20% from last year's $310 million, as reported by the National Retail Federation. At Wayfair.com, shoppers are buying more than just pet costumes this season with sales also increasing in Halloween accessories and night safety products for pet-friendly trick or treating.
Based on past sales and consumer browsing habits, superhero costumes for dogs and coordinated dog and child costumes will be increasingly popular in 2012 with many proud pet owners purchasing complementary costumes such as football player and cheerleader or Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. Additionally, pet owners are purchasing more Halloween-themed safety items and accessories this year including decorative leashes, collars with LED lights, and glow-in-the-dark garments.
"With a growing inventory of costumes displaying sizing charts and a wide variety of size options, it's now easier than ever for pet owners to select the perfect costume for Halloween fun," said Kelly Vail, pet category manager at Wayfair. "We saw a 43% increase in dog costumes sold in 2011 from the prior year and predict even higher sales in 2012."
