The Houston SPCA is asking the community to bring unopened bags of cat, dog, puppy and kitten food to the shelter, 900 Portway Drive, in support of their aniMeals on Wheels Holiday Food Drive. The goal is to collect 3,000 pounds of pet food by December 9, 2010!
aniMeals on Wheels was established by Interfaith Ministries in response to a worrying trend. Due to limited income and mobility, elderly pet owners would often be forced to make the difficult choice of feeding themselves or feeding their pets. Often, volunteers observed that enrollees in the Meals on Wheels program would feed their pets the protein from their meals, rather than eat it themselves, foregoing their own health for their pets’. The goal of aniMeals on Wheels is to ensure that low-income, elderly persons do not have to make this choice. Pets have a proven, positive impact on their owners’ health and happiness, as studies have uncovered the following benefits of animal companionship: reduced depression and stress, as well as increased psychological wellbeing, empathy, and socialization. Animals also offer and a source of nonjudgmental social support. Currently, the program serves a total of 775 pets (397 dogs and 378 cats), belonging to 317 seniors. In order to feed these pets, aniMeals on Wheels goes through approximately 3,850 lbs of dog food and 1,150 lbs of cat food—nearly 5,000 lbs—each month, or 60,000 lbs of food per year.
