HOUSTON -- KHOU is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year! Channel 11 signed on the air on March 22, 1953, as KGUL-TV in Galveston. In June 1959, the station changed its call letters to KHOU and relocated to Houston.
One of the saddest days at KHOU was in April 2000 when longtime anchorman Sylvan Rodriguez died from pancreatic cancer.
Sylvan capped his long and distinguished career as a newsman at KHOU. He faced cancer with poise, determination, and even humor. He was a mentor to many young journalists through the years. Those of us who had the honor of working with Sylvan still miss his warm smile and kind heart.
